belong to me
a poetic wandering through the ep
hello ✿
it’s been a while.
my ep belong to me has been out for about a month now. i hope you have listened to it, and would love for you to do so if you haven’t. it works best in order as a whole piece, listened to through headphones with orange light turned up.
the poem wild geese by Mary Oliver (my favourite poem) is what inspired this musical project, tiny geese, and the ep belong to me as its first official offering.
(however my firstborn ‘bird with painted wings’ is available to listen to exclusively on bandcamp ! listen here she is sweet and i love her:
Wild Geese
Mary Oliver
You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
for a hundred miles through the desert repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves.
Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
Meanwhile the world goes on.
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
are moving across the landscapes,
over the prairies and the deep trees,
the mountains and the rivers.
Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
are heading home again.
Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting -
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.lastly, a poetic wandering through belong to me:
wild geese fly over overhead, my arms outstretched
i look towards the ocean—
shadow
warm light from a hundred years ago
i have memories
but don’t really know if they truly
belong to me
does anything really belong to me?
a gemstone, a houseplant, a river
i look up at every bird
and i try to notice every bug
seeing my hand casting shadows
ask—is what i’m seeing really what i’m seeing?
and what lies beyond my eyes?
there is a dark feeling
in my stomach
that never really goes away
i reach out beyond the veil
and try to touch something
not quite earthly
then come back inside
because it’s cold and dark
and the light is on
and i’ve never experienced a winter
quite like this winter
